Volvo has been a leading innovator in the automotive market for years, so much so that many people refer to its designs as “uniquely Scandinavian” or simply “Volvo-esq.” The two new concepts from the Swedish automaker, named the Concept 40 series offer bold new styling and a unique perspective on car design that will open up architectural and design options for Volvo’s engineers. The two concepts, an SUV (the Volvo Concept 40.1) and a Sedan (Volvo Concept 40.2), are built atop Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Check out the video below to learn more about these awesome new concepts.
The strategy behind these new concept vehicles is to aim them toward a younger audience, millennials who tend to appreciate connectivity, electrified drivetrains, and youthful design. Volvo’s small car strategy will play an important role in positioning the brand competitively amongst other premium manufacturers. The new global small car line will include a pure-battery electric vehicle as well as a Twin Engine plug-in Hybrid, reaffirming the company’s commitment to electrifying the entire Volvo lineup.
”Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family. CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavour of small Volvos to come,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design, at Volvo Car Group
