Back when the 2015 Volvo XC90 was unveiled, we got word that it would have two powertrain options unlike any other. One was purported to be a 2.0L four-cylinder engine, while another would be the same mill fitted with two turbochargers and an electric turbo-compressor. The latter mill is referred to as the High Performance Drive-E Powertrain, and the results are quite impressive.
First of all, if the idea of a four-cylinder engine in an SUV makes you raise your eyebrows, you're not alone. But some of the things Volvo has done with this engine are pretty impressive. The tuning and electric application allows it to boast 450 horsepower, which averages out to 225 ponies per liter--an unheard of margin.
