As we like to discuss frequently on our Volvo blog, our preferred Swedish automaker is dedicated not only to the well-being of drivers and passengers, but also to that of pedestrians. That's demonstrated through the brand's attentive recalls and advanced safety features; the latter of which are receiving critical nods.

The two beneficial Volvo features in question are the Pedestrian Detection and Pedestrian Airbag Technology. Wonderfully, both were recently honored with the 2013 Innovation Award by Global NCAP, which stands for New Car Assessment Program.

The annual accolade given by Global NCAP, a nonprofit organization located in the UK, is awarded as a reflection of an automaker's commitment to ongoing advancements in automotive safety. This includes likeminded designs and technologies. With that said, it comes as no surprise to us at McLaughlin Volvo that our preferred Swedish brand was named the front-runner.

So, how do these award-winning technologies work?

Starting with the Volvo Pedestrian Detection system, this device aims to make crossing the road as safe as possible. As the technology's name implies, the automated feature detects people on the motorway and automatically applies the brakes if it identifies a possible collision. That's applicable at slower, city speeds and higher velocities.

As for the Pedestrian Airbag technology, this feature is currently only available in the European-offered Volvo V40. Although as the sensor-driven system, which deploys an exterior air bag intended to protect people in the street, grows increasingly popular; we're hoping it will become available worldwide.

In the meantime, we invite you to stop by our new Volvo showroom serving greater Rock Island with any questions. Conveniently situated in Moline, IL, we're happy to review the exciting and avant-garde features available with your preferred model.
